IRS-Certified Volunteers help residents claim Earned Income Tax Credit

Beaumont, Texas – Entergy Texas, Inc. has partnered with the Montgomery County United Way, Lamar University and Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas to help working families who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit. Entergy has designated two Super Tax Day events next week at local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites. Families who qualify for the EITC credit receive average refunds of $2,500 or more.

On Friday, Jan. 30 in Willis and Saturday, Jan. 31 in Beaumont, volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service will be on hand for Super Tax Day assistance. In Willis, volunteers will be available from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the North Montgomery County Community Center, 600 Gerald St.

In Beaumont, volunteers will be available Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gloria Ramirez Community Resource Center, 2850 Gulf Street (on the old Fairgrounds).

Additionally, throughout tax season at local VITA sites, certified volunteers will be available at other sites to help residents determine if they qualify for EITC and provide free tax preparation. The program benefits families or individuals earning $52,400 or less in 2014. For a list of VITA sites, visit entergy.com/eitc.

While 3.5 million Texas residents annually qualify for EITC, each year as many as 816,284 don’t claim credits valued to be as high as $2.1 million. Based on income and the number of children in the household, qualifying working families can receive as much as $6,000.

Entergy’s support to Super Tax Days in the four states the utility serves – Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas – has resulted in approximately 58,000 customers receiving $100 million through the EITC program since 2009. Entergy’s Super Tax Day initiative has been recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation as the nation’s best economic empowerment program.

“Through our Super Tax Day initiative, we are supporting Entergy’s commitment to poverty solutions, which in turn helps grow our local economies,” said Chance Sampson, Entergy Texas public affairs director. “Families use the tax credits they’ve earned to meet immediate needs like utility bills and groceries as well as make long-term investments such as education tuition or a down payment on a home.”
