Company suggests signing up for pilot ahead of scorching summer temps

NEW ORLEANS – When it comes to energy usage, weather is a major factor in how much or how little the meter spins.

And thanks to a pilot program launched by Entergy New Orleans, customers can not only learn how weather affects their home energy usage, but also how they can make informed choices about energy-saving measures.

Earlier this year, Orleans Parish customers should have received information announcing the pilot from Energy Smart, an energy-efficiency program developed by the New Orleans City Council and administered by Entergy New Orleans. The information includes a link to enroll and outlines scorecard benefits.

The scorecard provides customers with energy information that takes into account the weather, historical usage data and how their home compares with other similar-sized homes in the area. They can monitor their progress, see the results of their actions and, by personalizing their scorecard profiles, get customized tips for added insight.

“The goal of this pilot is to help our customers learn what makes the most impact on their energy usage that can, in turn, help them reduce their energy bills and keep more of their hard-earned cash in their pockets,” said Derek Mills, manager of Entergy New Orleans’ demand-side management programs. “We hope that everyone who hasn’t signed up already will take a few minutes to do so now so they can get started before the hot summer months take their toll.”

This Entergy New Orleans pilot is modeled after similar pilots in other cities – all of which are tied to customers’ energy-efficient behavior – and is a free way to learn how the outside temperature and simple steps like adjusting the thermostat, sealing leaks or closing window shades can make a difference.

“Knowing where the big energy users are can help customers become better energy managers,” said Mills. “Since heating and cooling account for over half of a typical home’s energy usage, and water heating accounts for approximately 20 percent, making simple adjustments in those two areas can equal big savings.”

Entergy New Orleans, Inc. is an electric and gas utility that serves Louisiana’s Orleans Parish. The company provides electricity to more than 198,000 customers and natural gas to more than 106,000 customers. Entergy New Orleans is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including nearly 9,000 megawatts of nuclear power. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.9 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of approximately $10.8 billion and nearly 13,000 employees.
