Buchanan – Indian Point’s Unit 3 nuclear power plant safely and automatically shut down this evening around 7:20 p.m. following an electrical disturbance external to the plant. The unit’s main electrical generator appropriately shut down as a protective measure following the disturbance.
The cause of the external electrical disturbance is not immediately known.

All equipment operated as expected during the shutdown. There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public.

Unit 3 returned to service May 24 following replacement of a main electrical transformer which had failed and caught fire on May 9.

Unit 2 continues operating at full power and has been online for 454 continuous days.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
