Entergy Arkansas Helps Single Parents Help Themselves

Two deserving single parents are well on their way to a better life, thanks to their own hard work and a little help from Entergy Arkansas. Whitney Watson of Augusta and Megan Hewitt of Newport are both recipients of the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund scholarships, which Entergy financially supports.

Watson, a Woodruff County resident, single parent and student at ASU Beebe, has balanced work, school and family for several semesters. She has been selected to receive the Entergy Scholar Award for a second time. Watson is graduating in December with an associate’s degree in nursing. She is currently working at AR Care in Augusta and will continue to be a resident of Augusta helping to provide care to those she loves.
"I fell in love with nursing, and this scholarship has helped me make that happen. I can't believe how far I have come," said Watson. "I started this journey in January 2018 with my 2-year old daughter, and while this journey has not been easy, I would not have made it without this scholarship. I am so thankful to be selected as an Entergy scholar and receive the Single Parent Scholarship."
Watson's scholarship was presented by Augusta Councilman Justin Taylor and Augusta Chief of Police Eric Morgan.
"Whitney is a success story not only for the Single Parent Scholarship Program but the community of Augusta," said Program Manager Alodia Hankins. "This is what our program is all about. Supporting single parents and helping them to start a new life with a career and goals benefitting themselves and the community they live in. We are so very proud of Whitney."
Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund for Woodruff County has been active since 2000, awarding 232 scholarships to local recipients.

Hewitt, a Jackson County resident, single parent of three and student at Purdue Global University, is graduating in December with a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration. Hewitt currently works at Quest Diagnostics. She is a second-time recipient of the Entergy Scholar Award.
"I am a 27-year-old single mom with three children who are 5 and under," said Hewitt. "The decision to go back to school last May was a hard one to make. I work full-time along with trying to keep up with other extracurricular activities, and I was afraid my children would feel the effects first. They are my biggest fan, and I'm thankful to God he has blessed me with so much. If not for this support, I do not think I would have made it.
“When I started this journey in May 2017, I wasn't sure how I was going to do this. This award has given me the chance to reach for the stars. As an Entergy Scholar recipient, you have helped open doors for me, and I will always be grateful. Thank you for making this possible for me and my children."
Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund for Jackson County has been active since 1997, awarding more than 425 scholarships to local recipients.
