Filing your taxes can be a daunting task, but some of our customers eased the stress of tax preparation and enjoyed greener returns this year by getting help during Entergy Mississippi’s Super Tax Day, Feb. 17.

Volunteers from Entergy Mississippi and Southern Bancorp spent the day in Greenville, Mississippi helping qualified customers prepare their taxes for free and determining if they were eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit program and other refunds and credits. More than 45 families came out for tax preparation assistance, resulting in an estimated $44,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits and approximately $63,000 total tax refunds.

In addition to tax assistance, customers had access to legal consultants and energy efficiency information. The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project provided pro bono legal services to 24 individuals. Entergy Solutions also handed out free LED light bulbs and provided helpful tips to customers about how to save money on their bill.

“The free services we provided on Super Tax Day and those at local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites that will be available through mid-April help power our customers’ lives,” said Gerald Husband, customer service representative. “By helping our customers get the tax credits they’ve earned, we can meet our commitment to help them become more financially independent. As customers’ lives improve, communities benefit.”

In Mississippi, more than 22,000 residents have received nearly $50 million in Earned Income Tax Credits since Entergy Mississippi launched the program by partnering with local advocates. EITC benefits families or individuals earning up to $54,000 in 2017. Based on income and the number of children in the household, benefits can add up to $6,200. While some 476,000 Mississippians qualify annually for EITC, each year as many as 70,450 don’t claim credits valued to be as high as $190.5 million.

Qualified customers who missed Super Tax Day can still get free tax preparation help at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, which are certified to provide free tax preparation assistance for qualifying families.
