Little Rock, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas has received a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2019 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award for effectively promoting energy efficiency.

ENERGY STAR® is the U.S. government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. The program provides simple, credible and unbiased information that consumers and businesses can rely on to make well-informed energy-related decisions. The EPA is specifically recognizing the company’s Lighting & Appliances program and its Commercial Midstream program.

The 2019 Residential Lighting & Appliances program offered discounted ENERGY STAR®-certified LED lighting and smart thermostats, as well as cash back for qualifying purchases of ENERGY STAR®-certified variable-speed pool pumps, dehumidifiers and air purifiers. This program saved 36,709 megawatt-hours of electricity in 2019.

The 2019 Commercial Midstream program engaged with local and national electrical distributors to discount the purchase of ENERGY STAR®-certified LED lamps and fixtures to qualifying commercial customers. Because it enables small, recurring purchases and requires no out-of-pocket expense, this program design is ideal for large commercial customers conducting phased upgrades or ongoing repair and maintenance, as well as smaller commercial customers performing do-it-yourself lighting upgrades or maintenance. This program saved 21,598 megawatt-hours of electricity in 2019.

Through its entire portfolio of Entergy Solutions programs, Entergy Arkansas has helped customers save more than 1.9 billion kilowatt hours of electricity over the 11 years the program has been in place. The energy saved in 2019, approximately 239,000,000 kWh, is roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity required to power all the homes in Little Rock for 10 months.

“It may seem counterintuitive that the electric company wants our customers to use less of what we sell,” said Gabe Munoz, Entergy Arkansas manager of energy efficiency. “However, energy efficiency programs cost less than a new power plant, so using less rather than building for more helps us keep our rates lower than the national and regional average. Lower rates help bring business to Arkansas. In addition, improving efficiency is good for the environment, a key objective for Entergy here in the Natural State.”

“This is the second time in 11 years that Entergy Arkansas has been awarded a Partner of the Year honor by the EPA,” said Munoz.

Besides its work with ENERGY STAR®, Entergy Arkansas’ energy efficiency programs have logged results including:

The 248,663,000 kWh saved through the energy efficiency programs in 2019 offset the greenhouse gas emissions from the equivalent of 38,000 passenger vehicles for one year.

  • In 2019, Entergy Solutions paid incentives of more than $36.2 million to customers to help them pay for energy efficiency improvements.
  • Offering energy efficiency programs to every subset of customers, including homeowners, renters, small business owners, landlords, low-income customers, municipal systems, schools, farmers, commercial customers and industrial customers. See program details HERE.

The ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year award recognizes ENERGY STAR® partner businesses and organizations in good standing that demonstrate superior leadership, innovation and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR®.
