Grid modernization offers new benefits for customers and communities

JACKSON, Mississippi– Grid modernization technologies can provide customers with money saving tools and help Entergy improve outage restoration and customer service.

Entergy Mississippi announced today its plan to deploy grid modernization technologies, paving the way for a smarter energy future that will offer a wide range of benefits to customers. It’s all part of the company’s long-term vision to use widely-adopted modern technologies to provide safe, reliable and affordable energy to customers.

Entergy Mississippi’s grid modernization initiatives include upgrading to advanced meters and expanding online energy management tools for customers.

The new technology includes a sophisticated communications network that will provide operators a clearer real-time picture of the power grid and how it is operating. This allows for outages to be identified more accurately so crews can arrive on the scene more quickly to make repairs.

It will also provide timely and more detailed information on their energy usage which will allow customers to adjust their power consumption between bills.

“We have an obligation and responsibility to power our customers’ lives through reliable and affordable service,” said Haley Fisackerly, president and CEO of Entergy Mississippi, Inc. “Working with the Mississippi Public Service Commission, we’re committed to helping our communities flourish. That means getting the lights back on quicker and helping businesses and residents save money.”

Benefits of this smarter energy future include:

  • Stronger and “smarter” localized electrical infrastructure to help improve system resiliency by helping us identify outages and restore electricity more quickly and potentially spot problems before they occur.
  • More tools and better information to help customers understand and manage their energy use more effectively, which can lead to lower bills.
  • Improved customer service, including better information that will allow us to answer customers’ billing and service questions more quickly and effectively.
  • The technology in place to potentially launch new programs to help further encourage and improve energy reduction and contribute to environmentally sustainable communities.

As part of this announcement, Entergy Mississippi is launching an informational website (entergymississippi.com/ami) around its vision for a smarter energy future. The company made its filing related to advanced metering infrastructure with the Public Service Commission today.

Deployment of advanced meters is expected to begin in 2019, with project completion scheduled for 2021.
