Safety Super Coaches Take to the Field at Entergy

01/31/2018

It’s been said that coaching is the universal language of change and learning. That philosophy, along with a commitment to continuously improve safety performance, drove the decision to add a group of experienced and dedicated super coaches to Entergy’s utility safety team. Darryl Daves, senior manager of utility safety at Entergy, has a new group of employees whose main focus will be to provide more enhanced safety observations and coaching.

The idea for super coaches came from the company’s Employee-Driven Excellence program, which sources ideas to improve the company from those who know best – employees engaged in the work. To test the concept, two super coaches have been working in Mississippi for two years as a pilot project. Having received positive feedback from employees and leaders alike, the idea was approved for use throughout Entergy’s utility companies.

"This is a huge win for our employees. This will be a dedicated group of experienced coaches whose sole job is to collaborate with our craftsmen, supervisors and managers to improve safety and our overall work environment." - Darryl Daves, senior manager of utility safety

“This is a huge win for our employees. This will be a dedicated group of experienced coaches whose sole job is to collaborate with our craftsmen, supervisors and managers to improve safety and our overall work environment,” said Daves.

The new positions will perform crew observations, conduct paired field observations with supervisors and emphasize effective coaching and feedback.

“We’ll coach our teams on the best practices of safety, pre-job planning, teamwork and safety leadership to improve our safety culture and performance,” Daves added.

“This is a smart, employee-driven approach that will provide hands-on safety coaching for our employees,” noted Rod West, Entergy’s group president of utility operations. “Feedback and results from the pilot program are encouraging, and I anticipate this program will help us achieve our goal of zero safety accidents.”
