A failure of insulation caused a main transformer at the Indian Point nuclear power plant's Unit 3 to short circuit and catch fire May 9, Entergy announced today.
Indian Point's Unit 3 nuclear power plant returned to service this afternoon, generating electricity less than 24 hours after the unit safely and automatically shut down following the failure of an electrical switch, or breaker, in a switchyard external to the plant. The switchyard is located across the street from Indian Point and receives electricity generated by the plant before distributing it out to the electrical grid.

Entergy's Indian Point Unit 3 nuclear power plant returned to service yesterday generating electricity, after a sixteen-day shutdown to replace a failed main electrical transformer. The unit had safely and automatically shut down when the transformer failed on May 9.
Entergy's Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station has returned to full service, renewed after a $70 million investment to upgrade, replace, overhaul and inspect hundreds of pieces of equipment that make the plant safer today than when it was built.
Entergy personnel continue working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate and mitigate the environmental impact of dielectric fluid on the river following the May 9 transformer failure at Indian Point Unit 3.
Entergy continues to investigate the cause of the failed transformer and subsequent spill of the transformer's dielectric fluid following the event which occurred on May 9. The failed transformer is located outdoors in the transformer yard and external to any buildings that contain radioactive materials.
Entergy continues to lead response and mitigation efforts following the May 9 transformer failure that led to the safe shutdown of Indian Point unit 3.
Security officers will be participating in scheduled training drills at the Indian Point Energy Center during parts of the day and evening on April 23 and April 28 involving simulated attack scenarios that are intended to be as realistic as possible.
